Talented and versatile seamstress is devoted to her craft and her clients

Cheryl Thompson is a perfectionist and artisan who can handle any sewing jobs from wedding dresses to canvas boat covers

Cheryl Thompson started learning to sew in grade one in her native Guyana where sewing was a compulsory subject taught throughout elementary school. She took to it right away and by age eleven she was making all her own clothes, as well as clothing for her brothers and sisters. She continued to do this up to her graduation from high school after which she attended a training program to become a teacher.

Cheryl taught grade one classes for the next ten years which included teaching classes in sewing. Throughout this period she continued to made clothes for herself and her family.

In 1977, she immigrated to Canada with her husband and children – settling in Montreal. She immediately opened her own sewing business from her home. She took in work from individuals – making dresses, skirts, blouses, men’s suits as well as providing alterations. At the same time she contracted her services to businesses in the West Island such as Tailleur Pointe Claire, Stitch It, bridal shops and others.

Three years ago, in order to provide an easier access for her customers, Cheryl opened her own commercial shop “Couture Classique C.N. Inc. at 12207 Gouin, in Pierrefonds.

“I love to sew”, says Cheryl. “Besides sewing for my clients, I have sewn all the clothing for my husband and children. All my kids know how to sew – even my son”. “I have made, altered or repaired every item of clothing. I have sewn anything you can think of from drapes, curtains and tablecloths to gazebos, cushions, chair coverings and canvas boat covers.”

She also has extensive experience in sewing leather jackets, pants and skirts and is expert at leather restoration.

Because of her intense concern for her clients and her perfectionist attitude towards the work she does, Cheryl inspires deep loyalty from all who use her services.

Professional singer Dolours Thornhill of Pierrefonds discovered Couture Classique three years ago while driving by the shop. She explains:

“I brought her a formal dress that needed some alterations. I was so impressed with the work she did that   later on I had her make four more dresses for me – plus tons of repairs and alterations. She is excellent and I have referred her to others many times”.

Gerrine Doucet, also of Pierrefonds, is another happy client:

“Because of my small size I need a lot of custom made clothes”, she says. Cheryl made a dress for me and did other alterations. Her work is excellent. I plan to have her make a coat for me. I’m very satisfied and I recommend her without hesitation.”

Cheryl Thompson has developed a devoted and loyal clientele by taking a genuine and friendly interest in the clients’ projects. The quality of her work and the intense focus she applies to every job guarantees customer satisfaction.
